Steps to test it out

  1. Firstly,  you will test how to verify your passport during  online check-in.   Your passport information is stored locally in EU Digital Identity Wallet  in your mobile phone and shared to authorities by law
  2. Optionally,  if you consent, you will be able to enroll your biometric portrait to airport touchpoints  .  Your biometric portrait is also stored locally in EU Digital Identity Wallet in your mobile phone and shared to airport touchpoints ( bag drop, pre-security, boarding gate)  for a smooth and efficient airport experience based on facial recognition.
  3. Finally your online check-in is done successfully.

1. What is up with EU Digital Identity Wallet ?

  • During the summer, Amadeus and Lufthansa will test the EU Digital Identity Wallets for online check-in and in-person travel scenarios at the airport, like check-in, bag-drop and boarding. Later in 2025, Finnair and Amadeus will test the EU Digital Identity Wallets for digital travel credential use cases, such as airport security and border control.

2. How EU digital Identity Wallet is set to improve the experience of travel ?

  • Online check-in: rather than manually entering passport details on an airline’s website, travelers can choose to provide documents stored in the wallet with a single click.
  • Biometric enrollment: with one click or taptravelers can choose to securely share their biometric profile with an airline online or at airport touchpoints, removing the need for them to take a selfie or scan documents to use biometrics at the airport.
  • At the airport: instead of presenting physical documents, travelers can tap their phone at check-in desks, self-service kiosks, auto bag drop machines, lounge entry and boarding gates (If the traveler has chosen to use biometrics only a face scan is required)

3. What is Data wallet ?

  • Data Wallet, provided by iGrant.io/Lcubed AB is one of many sample   EU Digital Identity Wallets being tested in the scope of EU large scale piloting (LSP)
  • Every member state will provide at least one wallet from 2026 to all its citizens, allowing them to prove who they are, and safely store, share and sign important digital documents.

4. What is PID( personal identification data) and PhotoID  ( digital version of your passport) ?

  • PID is the personal identification data  like your name and date of birth used for identification. PID is usually required before any digital documents can be stored in EU Digital Identity Wallets
  • PhotoID is a digital version of your passport attributes including your portrait , PhotoID is one of many possible digital documents that can be stored in EU Digital Identity Wallets ,
  • Digital documents  could be less sensitive documents such as gym membership card or train tickets, or more official document such as social security document , digital version of your passport document
  • in this test, PID and PhotoID is issued directly from QR code , whilst in real life, you could NFC your physical passport to issue your real digital credentials in the EU wallet

5. What is coming next ?

  • In this test, Hanna is obliged to open EU wallet twice , 1st time to verify passport, 2nd time to share the portrait ===> we believe this user experience could be improved e.g Hanna should only open EU wallet once
  • Hanna is also obliged to choose EU wallet within airline check-in flow  ==> we believe this user experience could be improved e.g Hanna could choose any wallet of her choice natively within her mobile
